The Augsburg Puppet Theater Museum, “the box”
Jim Knopf, Urmel, Sam and Kater Mikesch: the “Stars on Strings” are the stars of the Augsburg Puppet Theater. Their distinctive wooden heads are exhibited in “the box” Museum in original stage sets and in showcases. The museum is located in the house of the marionette theater which is the most successful puppet theater museum in Europe (Spitalgasse 15).

Lettl Museum
Immerse yourself in the surrealist imagery of the artist Wolfgang Lettl (1919-2008), a native of Augsburg. In a modern, inspiring ambience (rooflight dome) the non-profit Museum permanently displays more than 100 works of Lettl’s extensive collection. At times it also hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions (occassionally by ‚invited‘ artists).

Brechthaus
The birthplace of the world-famous writer Bertolt Brecht is now a memorial to his life. The Brechthaus museum exhibits texts, pictures, documents and works of art about Brecht’s life. There are five rooms highlighting his childhood and youth in Augsburg, university years and his writings from 1917 to 1924, his exile and his work after returning to Europe. (Auf dem Rain 7).

Diözesan Museum St. Afra
Experience 17 centuries of history. Excavations from Roman times, textiles from the 9th to the 13th centuries, the famous bronze portal from Augsburg’s Cathedral, Gothic and Baroque treasures from churches as well as contemporary art invite you on a journey through the bishopric of St. Ulrich. It is just behind the Cathedral!

Fuggerei Museum
The history of the Fuggerei is told in the museum’s permanent exhibition and in a film. The only originally preserved domicile from the 16th century includes a kitchen, living room and bedroom in which visitors can get an idea of life in the oldest social housing settlement in the world. A modern model Apartment shows life in the Fuggerei today. (Jakoberstraße, Museum in Mittlere Gasse 13 and 14).

The Fugger and Welser Museum allows visitors to experience the various facets of the era of “the Fuggers and the Welsers - the most influential trading families of the Renaissance.” The museum also encourages reflection on the economic situation in the world today as well as integrating current business news and information.

H2 - Center for Contemporary Art
This exhibit of modern art is displayed in the Glaspalast, a 2000 square meter space which is a monument to Augsburg’s industrial past. Temporary installations and the State Gallery of Modern Art (a branch of the Pinakothek of Modern Art in Munich) provide for H2’s exhibition. (Beim Glaspalast 1)

Jewish Cultural Museum Augsburg - Swabia
A permanent exhibition illuminates the stirring history of the Jews in Augsburg and in the rural Jewish communities in Bavarian Swabia as well as the history of the Augsburg Synogogue. It is considered to be one of the most architecturally important synogogues in Europe. (Halderstraße 6 – 8).

The Maximilian Museum presents cultural history: sculptures, Augsburg silver, the model chamber with hydro-technical instructional models and architectural models by Elias Holl,scientific instruments and clocks, porcellain and pottery as well as the city history collection. In the Viermetzhof courtyard the original bronzes of Augustus, Mercury and Hercules fountains are displayed, (Fuggerplatz 1).

Reopening: On 7th of march Leopold-Mozart-Haus will be opened from 3pm to 8pm and on 8th of march from 10 am to 5pm. The entrance is free. Regular opening hours: Tuesday till Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. On mondays closed. Natural History Museum Augsburg
The Natural History Museum features exhibits in the areas of mineralogy, Geologe, ecology, and zoology. Unique in southern Germany is the “Molasses-Exhibition”, which shows the fossils of the animal world of Tertiäre. The Planetarium of the Stadtsparkasse completes the Natural History Museum: it draws visitors into the world of outer space and planets and stars (Ludwigstr. 2).

Roman Museum
The Renaissance meets Rome: in the Tuscan hall of columns in the armory you can see the exhibit “Roman camp. Roman Augsburg in Boxes” which includes gems of the Roman Museum: ancient stone monuments, a Roman pot of gold,ceramics and glasses, the stone body of a sphynx, a life-sized bronze horse head, and the relics of the Roman fort on the Lech.(Zeugplatz 4).

Schaezler Palace
The Schaezler Palace is home to the German Baroque Gallery, the collection of the Karl and Magdalene Haberstock Foundation and a light-filled Rococo ballroom. In addition to paintings by Augsburg masters of the 17th and 18th centuries, visitors can see works by world-famous painters like Peter Paul Rubens, van Dyck and Tiepolo. The Rocco style palace and its garden are well worth seeing (Maximilianstr. 46).

Staatsgalerie in der Katharinenkirche
The State Gallery is only accessible through the Schaezler Palace: beneath the gothic arches of the sacred structure of the former monastery of St. Catherine one can view Dürer’s portrait of Jakob Fugger “the rich”. There are also paintings by Gothic master like Hans Holbein the Elder, Hans Burgkmair the Elder, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. (Maximilianstraße 46).

World War II Bomb Shelter Fuggerei
The original preserved bomb Shelter from 1944 contains a film, a soundtrack, many photos and exhibits which document the destruction of the oldest social housing settlement in the world. It also shows Augsburg’s old town in the bombing night of February 1944, the reconstruction and expansion of the Fuggerei until 1973 (access at the main entrance on Jakoberstraße).
